Designating
Type of Bequest You'll need to decide whether to leave a percentage of
your estate or a specific dollar amount (or asset, such as stocks or mutual funds).
Alternatively, you may elect to leave the residue or a part of the residue of
your estate. Bequests may also be contingent. Here's sample language:
- Percentage Bequest: "I give ___% of my estate to the MPT Foundation,
Inc., located at 11767 Owings Mills Boulevard, Owings Mills MD 21117,
(TIN 52-1224503) to be used for its general use and purposes.
- Specific Bequest: "I give and bequeath unto the MPT Foundation,
Inc., a non-profit Maryland corporation, all of my shares of XYZ Mutual
Fund for its general use and purposes. The MPT Foundation, Taxpayer
Identification Number 52-1224503, is located at 11767 Owings Mills Blvd.,
Owings Mills MD 21117."
- Contingent Bequest: "If (name of primary beneficiary) does
not survive me, or shall die during the administration of my estate,
or as a result of a common disaster, then I give to MPT Foundation,
Inc. all of the rest, residue, and remainder of my estate, to be used
for the benefit of Maryland Public Television."
Directing Use of the Bequest Unless otherwise directed,
your bequest will be unrestricted. A growing number of donors are electing to
direct their gifts toward MPT's endowment funds. Unrestricted Bequests
General, unrestricted gifts are especially valuable for they allow MPT
to invest in organizational opportunities considered a priority at the time the
gift becomes available. MPT's current priorities give you an idea of the sorts
of initiatives that your gift might fund in the future. The sample language
provided above are examples of unrestricted bequests. Restricted Bequests
Restricted bequests afford you the opportunity to direct your assets to one
of MPT's endowment funds: - The Maryland Public Television General
Endowment Fund, the disbursements of which benefit MPT as a whole.
