Remainder Trusts
Marjorie
was looking for a way to show appreciation for the fine
education she received from the Sisters and also share her
good fortune in making wise investments. When she attended
a seminar on trusts, she learned she could avoid a large
capital gains tax on her stock and, at the same time, give
generously to charities of her choice. After consulting
with her lawyer, she established a charitable remainder
trust with the added benefit of receiving quarterly payments
for the rest of her life.
At
the time, Marjorie said, "I am delighted to be making
such a valuable contribution to the sisters who are involved
in so many worthy causes."

Marjorie
continued to receive quarterly payments until she passed
away. The remaining assets in the trust she established
will continue on, furthering the good works of the Sisters
of Notre Dame de Namur, which was exactly what Marjorie
wanted.
There
are two different types of charitable remainder trusts.
A
charitable remainder unitrust (see example)
is a popular way to achieve tax benefits as well as a fixed
annual percentage on the value of the assets in the trust.
The assets are revalued annually and, if the trust value
changes, the payment to the beneficiary(ies) changes.
A
charitable remainder annuity trust is set up to pay a fixed
rate of return based on the initial valuation at the time
the property is placed in the trust. The trust assets are
never revalued.
Some
additional information
on charitable remainder trusts is also available. Charitable
Remainder Trusts provide a good degree of flexibility that
is valuable in charitable gift planning. For example, a
variation
on remainder trusts can be an effective way to make gifts
of real estate. A graphic
example of a charitable remainder trust is available.
